The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable urban development with plans to collaborate with the Banana Island Property Owners and Residents Association (BIPORAL) to improve the functionality, accessibility, and infrastructure of Banana Island, Lagos.
The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, disclosed this on Friday during a courtesy visit by members of BIPORAL to the Ministry in Alausa.
Dr. Olumide emphasized the need for a comprehensive review of Banana Island’s layout to ensure the high-end estate operates efficiently in line with Lagos State’s urban planning standards.
He commended the association’s proactive engagement toward achieving sustainable estate development.
“A critical challenge that must be urgently addressed is accessibility. Presently, there is only one entry and exit point to Banana Island. This calls for a collaborative effort to enhance connectivity, efficiency, and overall security of the estate,” the Commissioner stated.
He added that the partnership will focus on key areas such as infrastructure upgrade, planning approval compliance, improved accessibility, and control of illegal building extensions to maintain the integrity of the estate’s master plan.
The Permanent Secretary, Office of Physical Planning, Engr. Oluwole Sotire, described the collaboration as a significant step towards restoring the vision of Banana Island as a model estate for sustainable urban development in Lagos State.
According to him, the initiative will not only rejuvenate the estate’s infrastructure but also serve as a benchmark for other highbrow residential communities in Lagos.
The Chairman of BIPORAL, Ambassador Abidemi Sonoiki appreciated the State Government for its openness to partnership.
He sought the government’s support in sanitising the estate and enhancing its overall livability, while assuring of the residents’ commitment to the joint effort.
