A tragic accident has claimed the lives of 21 Kano State athletes who were returning from the National Sports Festival, ‘Gateway 2025’, held in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The incident occurred at Dakatsalle Bridge in Kura Local Government Area, Kano State, involving an official bus carrying 36 passengers.
According to reports, the bus met with a ghastly accident, resulting in the loss of 21 lives.
The Kano State Government has confirmed the incident and expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy.
Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Kano State, Hon. Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso, extend condolences to the affected contingents and their families.
In a press release, he described the incident as a deeply painful moment for people of Kano state.
“This is a deeply painful moment for all of us. We are devastated by the news of the ghastly accident that occurred as our athletes were returning home after representing our great state with pride and commitment. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and the entire sporting community in Kano”.
He thereby assured that the government would provide necessary medical attention and support to those affected.
“The government stands firmly with the affected individuals and will ensure they receive the necessary medical attention and support,” Kwankwaso stated.
The commissioner praised the efforts of first responders and medical personnel attending to the victims and promised a thorough investigation into the incident.
