Afro-Fuji Singer Destiny Boy Dies at 22, Police Launch Investigation

The Nigerian music industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of popular Afro-Fuji singer Afeez Adeshina, widely known as Destiny Boy, who died at the age of 22.


The death of the young artiste was confirmed on Sunday, January 18, 2026, after reports of his passing surfaced on social media, sparking an outpouring of grief from fans and colleagues within the entertainment industry.


Destiny Boy rose from humble beginnings to national recognition through his unique blend of traditional Fuji music and contemporary street-pop sounds. He first gained widespread attention in 2019 after his Fuji-styled cover of Davido’s hit song “If” went viral, earning him a loyal fan base.


Before venturing fully into music, the late singer was a dancer at T2 Boys Studios, where he honed his performance skills. He later released several popular songs, including “Lamba,” “One Transaction,” “Gbese,” “Billion Dollar,” and “Lowkey,” which helped establish him as one of the promising young voices in the Afro-Fuji genre.


Meanwhile, the Ogun State Police Command has confirmed that an investigation has commenced into the circumstances surrounding his death. According to police authorities, one suspect has been arrested and the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Homicide Section, for further investigation.


The police said details of the investigation would be made public as inquiries progress, urging members of the public to refrain from speculation and allow due process to take its course.


Family members of the late singer disclosed that he had been managing health challenges prior to his death, noting that efforts were made to seek medical attention over time.


Destiny Boy is survived by his partner and a young child. Tributes have continued to pour in from fans, fellow artistes, and industry stakeholders, who have described him as talented, hardworking, and full of promise.
His death marks another painful loss to Nigeria’s vibrant music scene, as many continue to celebrate his contributions while awaiting the outcome of ongoing investigations.
