Concern has continued to mount among residents and commuters around Iruno Bus Stop in Ikorodu, Lagos State, following the discovery of a dead body at the pedestrian bridge in the area.
The corpse, which was reportedly discovered on Thursday, had remained at the scene as of Monday, raising concerns among residents over public health, environmental safety and the need for the appropriate authorities to intervene.
Residents said the unattended body had begun to constitute a nuisance in the area, with commuters and pedestrians reportedly exposed to unpleasant odour and growing concerns about possible health risks associated with leaving a decomposing body in a busy public environment.
The pedestrian bridge, which is regularly used by residents and commuters crossing the road, has reportedly become a source of concern since the discovery of the corpse.
According to information gathered, attempts to draw the attention of relevant authorities to the situation had yet to result in the removal of the body as of Monday.
Residents are particularly concerned that the corpse has remained unattended for about five days without a visible response from the relevant emergency, environmental or law enforcement authorities.
A resident who spoke on the development appealed to the Lagos State Government and relevant agencies to urgently visit the area, remove the body and ensure that the surroundings are properly cleaned and sanitised.
The resident said, “We are appealing to the authorities to come and attend to this situation. The body has been here since Thursday, and people are passing through this place every day. It is becoming uncomfortable and frightening for residents and commuters.”
Another resident called for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death, urging the authorities to ensure that the appropriate procedures are followed in handling and identifying the deceased.
As of the time of filing this report, there was no official information on the identity of the deceased, the circumstances surrounding the death or whether the body had been formally examined by medical or law enforcement personnel.
Residents urged the police, Lagos State environmental authorities, emergency responders and other relevant agencies to respond promptly to the situation, stressing that leaving the corpse unattended in a busy public area for several days could worsen the environmental nuisance.
They also appealed for the area to be disinfected after the removal of the body to protect residents, traders, pedestrians and other road users from possible environmental hazards.
